The Story Behind Upstairs
From New York to Shimokitazawa
店主の永友慎さんは、ニューヨークで『Weekend Records』を営み、DJ ShadowやCut Chemist、Kenny Dope、DJ SpinnaといったディガーやDJが立ち寄る店として知られました。帰国後は下北沢で『ひよこレコード』を開き、2017年に現在のUpstairs Records & Barをスタート。レコード店と五席のバーがひとつの部屋に同居するこの店の棚には、カウンターの内側で重ねてきた年月が、そのまま並んでいます。
Upstairs is the third chapter of a long record-shop story. Owner Makoto Nagatomo first ran Weekend Records in New York — a shop known for visits from diggers and DJs including DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, Kenny Dope and DJ Spinna. Back in Tokyo, he opened Hiyoko Records in Shimokitazawa, and in 2017 he brought it all upstairs: a record shop and a small five-seat bar sharing one room. The records on the shelves, and the ones spinning, come from decades spent behind the counter.
